Authentic Venetian Plaster in York County, ME
Venetian plaster is a multi-coat, hand-applied wall finish made from lime putty and marble dust. It creates a surface with genuine depth and texture that shifts with light throughout the day. No paint, wallpaper, or faux finish replicates it. Putnam Coastal Painting applies authentic Venetian plaster for homeowners across York County and southern Cumberland County, Maine.
This is a specialty decorative finish. If you are also interested in microcement, we offer a free comparison consultation to help you decide which finish suits your space.
What Makes Venetian Plaster Different
Venetian plaster differs from paint and from other decorative finishes in ways that matter to the result you live with every day:
- Depth: Paint sits on the surface. Venetian plaster has physical thickness and translucency. Light passes through the surface layers and reflects back, creating a depth no flat paint can produce.
- Movement: The finish changes throughout the day as light angles shift. Morning light, afternoon sun, and evening lamp light produce different visual effects on the same wall.
- Uniqueness: Applied by hand with a steel trowel. No two applications are identical. Your finish is genuinely one of a kind.
- Longevity: Properly applied and sealed Venetian plaster lasts decades. Historic buildings in Europe have plaster surfaces that are centuries old.
Where Venetian Plaster Works Best
Venetian plaster performs best on interior walls in conditioned spaces. Ideal applications include:
- Living room and dining room accent walls and full rooms
- Entry foyers and hallways where the tactile quality creates a strong first impression
- Primary bedrooms and sitting rooms
- Fireplace surrounds and architectural feature walls
- Low-humidity bathrooms when properly sealed with a wax or polyurethane topcoat
Venetian Plaster vs. Limewash vs. Microcement: The Honest Comparison
- Venetian Plaster: Multi-coat, burnished lime finish with high depth and sheen. Best on walls and ceilings. Premium labor cost. Classic European aesthetic. Very durable when sealed.
- Limewash: Single or two coat lime paint wash. Softer, more matte, slightly chalky. More accessible price point. Easier to recoat. Good for rustic, aged, or farmhouse aesthetics.
- Microcement: Cement and resin composite. Seamless, waterproof, applies to walls and floors. More industrial modern aesthetic. Ideal for bathrooms, showers, and floors where waterproofing is critical.

Our Application Process
Venetian plaster requires multiple coats applied with a steel trowel, with precise timing and technique between each coat. The burnishing step, where a clean steel trowel is drawn firmly across the nearly-set final coat, is what creates the characteristic depth and sheen. This is a skilled craft application, not a paint job.
Coat 1: A base coat is applied to the prepared, primed wall to create a consistent foundation. Allowed to cure fully.
Coat 2: The first plaster coat is applied with a steel trowel in overlapping passes, leaving a slight texture. Trowel pressure and angle vary to create movement.
Coat 3: A finish coat is applied while the second coat is still slightly plastic. This is the layer where final texture and depth are established.
Burnishing: A clean steel trowel is drawn firmly across the surface while the final coat is still workable. This compresses and polishes the lime particles, creating the characteristic depth and sheen. This is the step that cannot be rushed.
Sealing: Once fully cured, the surface is sealed with wax or a clear polyurethane topcoat depending on the application and desired sheen level.
Durability and Maintenance
Properly applied and sealed Venetian plaster is hard, smooth, and very durable. It does not dent or scuff the way drywall does. It can be cleaned with a damp cloth. The wax or polyurethane seal protects the surface from moisture and light cleaning.
In a standard living room or bedroom application, you should expect decades of life from the finish with no maintenance beyond routine cleaning. In a bathroom, the sealed surface handles humidity well but should not be directly splashed repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Venetian plaster made of?
Traditional Venetian plaster is made from slaked lime putty, marble dust, and pigments. Modern products may use synthetic polymers to improve workability and reduce cure time while maintaining the visual characteristics of the traditional material. We discuss product options during your design consultation.
Can Venetian plaster be applied in a bathroom?
Yes, with proper sealing. A wax or polyurethane topcoat makes the surface moisture resistant for bathroom walls. We do not recommend unsealed Venetian plaster in wet zones like shower walls or areas with direct water contact. Low humidity bathrooms are generally fine with proper sealing.
How long does Venetian plaster last?
Decades when properly applied and sealed. Lime plaster is one of the most durable interior wall finishes available. Historic buildings across Europe have Venetian plaster installations that are centuries old. In a modern Maine home, a properly applied plaster finish should outlast the owners of the home.
Can I see a sample in my home before committing?
Yes. We offer an in-home sample application on a small wall section or a sample board so you can see the exact finish, color, and sheen in your specific lighting before committing to a full room. This is the best way to make a confident decision on a premium finish.
What does Venetian plaster cost?
Venetian plaster is priced by square footage and varies based on surface complexity, number of coats, color, and finish level. It is a premium service that costs significantly more per square foot than standard painting. We provide a detailed written estimate during your design consultation. There are no published price lists because every project is custom.
